Album cover titled 'The Morning Dark' by Hayden Stern with a dark green background, orange and white illustrations of a hand, sun, and roots.

I'm a Seattle-based fiddle player who has just recorded The Morning Dark, an album of Scottish and contra dance influenced original fiddle tunes. These tunes were written and arranged in the course of my travels all around the United States, playing concerts and contra dances with my bandmates. They weave together the stories of my musical past and present: growing up playing Scottish and Irish music in the redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains, playing for Scottish ceilidh and country dance as a teenager, and a present musical life filled with contra dance music, Scottish tunes, and a friend group that really, really loves polskas.

I spent a beautiful week recording with engineer Eli Crews and producer Yann Falquet at Spillway Sound in West Hurley, NY, and now it's time to bring this album into the world. The Morning Dark contains 12 tracks with 16 original compositions, spanning the gamut of emotion from ecstasy to grief to quiet resolve. These tunes, while contemporary, are deeply grounded in their roots as traditional dance music.

I ran a highly successful Kickstarter campaign and am looking forward to opening this album for prerelease on 8/11 via Adhyaropa Records.
