Hayden Stern and Pat Gunning at the Royal Room (opening for Rachel Sumner)

Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light is a Boston-based string band blending folk tradition with feminist storytelling, poetic detail, and grit. Led by songwriter Rachel Sumner, the trio features Kat Wallace (fiddle, vocals) and Mike Siegel (upright bass, vocals), delivering spare, intimate songs rooted in history, myth, and personal reckoning. They call it Femericana – sharp-edged Americana with a splash of feminine rage.

Hayden Stern brings a dynamic fiddle style shaped by Scottish and Cape Breton tradition, contemporary composition, and improvisation, honed through years in the contra dance world. Joined by multi-instrumentalist Pat Gunning, whose guitar, mandolin, and fiddle draw from Scottish, bluegrass, and Scandinavian traditions, the duo offers rhythm-driven, expressive sets that move effortlessly between power and delicacy.
